Combating climate change
The challenges of climate change, in parallel with a growing global population and increasing consumption, put an enormous pressure on the world’s natural resources as well as society. Action is needed now to assure a resilient planet.
Stora Enso is committed to reducing emissions in its own production, as well as across its value chain in line with the Science Based Targets initiative’s 1.5-degree pathway. Our climate targets encompass reducing absolute Scope 1 & 2 CO2e emissions 50% from the 2019 baseline by 2030 and reducing absolute Scope 3 CO2e emissions 50% from the 2019 baseline by 2030. Additionally, we are committed to net-zero carbon emissions by 2040 as a signatory to The Climate Pledge.
Actions underlining our targets are based on 1) sustainably managed forests, 2) enhancing resource and energy efficiency and lowering carbon intensity in operations and the value chain, as well as 3) products that store carbon and substitute fossil-based and other finite materials.
Growing and resilient forests
Sustainable forest management promotes healthy, resilient, and growing forests, which absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and preserve biodiversity while securing the long-term availability of wood. Forest regeneration is also a crucial part of sustainable forest management, assuring there are always forests growing to bind carbon.
At the same time, forests must be able to adapt to a changing climate. We actively manage climate risks in our own forests as well as support our suppliers’ work in sustainable forestry. Our efforts to enhance forest biodiversity and promote healthy ecosystems further supports forest resilience as well as helps to protect forests against adverse climate impacts.
Efficient operations and value chain
Operational and resource efficiency is essential in combatting climate change. Through a proactive and systematic approach, we strive for low carbon solutions, energy intensity reduction and self-sufficiency.
In our operations, actions include continuous optimisation of energy efficiency with targeted measures at production sites, investments in energy efficiency supported by a dedicated investment fund, utilisation of long-term energy supply contracts to ensure reliable energy supply and certified ISO 50001 energy management systems to mitigate risk exposure and enhance performance. As much as possible, we use renewable biomass fuels from residuals from harvesting operations and production processes.
We address sustainability throughout our value chain, and we expect our Suppliers to do the same. All Suppliers are expected the follow our comprehensive Supplier Code of Conduct.
Products from renewable materials
Stora Enso’s products for packaging and wooden construction and our bio-based innovations can help to reduce CO2 emissions by replacing fossil-based and other non-renewable alternatives while also serving to store carbon.
Fiber-based packaging can help to reduce dependency on fossil-based plastics. In the construction sector, building with wood can result in less carbon emissions than building with concrete and steel. Lignin can replace fossil-based materials in glues and batteries.
The carbon in these renewable products is stored through their lifetime, even in recycling.
