Veracel
Veracel is a pulp production company co-owned by Stora Enso and the Brazilian pulp and paper company Suzano. It processes renewable raw materials from trees to help reduce the world’s dependence on fossil-based materials. Located in the state of Bahia in eastern Brazil, Veracel manages eucalyptus plantations and operates an efficient pulp production unit in Eunápolis. Stora Enso holds a 50% ownership stake in the company, making Veracel a strategic joint operation that supports the company’s goal of accelerating the transition towards a circular bioeconomy.
Veracel combines high performance with Atlantic rainforest restoration
As one of the top-performing pulp producers in the market, Veracel combines operational efficiency with a strong commitment to environmental responsibility, particularly in the conservation and restoration of the unique Atlantic rainforest ecosystem. When Veracel’s eucalyptus plantations were established in 1991, only a small fraction of the original Atlantic rainforest remained in southern Bahia due to decades of deforestation and land conversion. Since then, Veracel has worked systematically to protect and restore this vital biome.
Today, more than 100,000 hectares or approximately 140,000 football fields, are dedicated as environmental set-aside areas. These protected areas include both voluntary conservation and legally mandated zones, such as legal reserves and permanent preservation areas.
In addition to protection, Veracel has actively engaged in restoration since 1994, replanting up to 400 hectares of native Atlantic rainforest each year on degraded land. In 2025, the company signed a landmark restoration agreement with Biomas to restore a further 1,200 hectares, financed through future revenues from carbon credits, reinforcing its commitment to long-term ecosystem recovery and climate resilience.
Committed to local communities and socioeconomic development
Veracel’s presence across 11 municipalities in southern Bahia makes it a major regional actor, not only economically, but also socially and culturally. The region is one of Brazil’s most biodiverse and socioeconomically diverse areas, home to a wide range of local, traditional, and indigenous communities, as well as landless rural workers’ movements.
Veracel takes a long-term, structured approach to community engagement, built on ongoing dialogue with these diverse stakeholders. Its initiatives are designed to support inclusive and sustained development across three key areas:
- Economic empowerment: Job creation, skills development, education, and entrepreneurship programs help strengthen local economies and expand opportunities for all.
- Social development: Investments in social infrastructure and public services promote well-being and reduce inequality in surrounding communities.
- Cultural preservation: Veracel actively supports local traditions, cultural initiatives, and heritage conservation, helping sustain the unique identity of the region.
By working collaboratively with local leaders, NGOs, universities, and community groups, Veracel aims to ensure its operations are not only accepted but also integrated and valued as part of the local society.
Embracing regulatory initiatives to resolve land disputes
Brazil’s land situation is complex, with historical claims, overlapping land titles, and long-running judicial processes affecting communities, companies, and public institutions alike. Veracel acknowledges this complexity and operates with transparency, integrity, and full respect for the rule of law, democratic principles, and human rights.
The company welcomes regulatory developments and court rulings that help settle land disputes and clarify the business environment. These decisions create the predictability and fairness that benefit all actors—landowners, workers, investors, and communities alike. By aligning with evolving legal frameworks and maintaining open dialogue with public authorities and civil society, Veracel plays an active role in promoting responsible land use and sustainable forestry practices in Brazil.
