Stora Enso launches Performa Natura Aqua, a dispersion-coated board for foodservice and bakery packaging

In foodservice and bakery packaging, performance is not defined by a single property. Grease resistance, stiffness, and print quality all need to work together from production lines to consumers. With Performa Natura Aqua, Stora Enso introduces a dispersion-coated folding boxboard developed to bring these elements together in a single construction.

Performa Natura Aqua is a GC2 cartonboard built with a three-layer structure to deliver strength and bulk while maintaining a consistent surface for printing and converting. The board combines a double pigment-coated top side with a dispersion barrier-coated reverse side. The barrier provides grease resistance on the food contact surface while supporting high-quality print performance on the outside.

The product has been specifically developed for end-uses where packaging is put to immediate use and materials are expected to perform under contact and handling, such as foodservice, bakery, and certain frozen and dry food products. “Applications such as foodservice and bakery packaging place immediate and combined demands on the material, where performance must be delivered consistently across handling, contact, and visual presentation,” says Jenni Kenttamaa, Business Development Manager.

By integrating the dispersion barrier directly into the board, Performa Natura Aqua enables consistent performance without requiring additional processing steps. The underlying board structure has been developed to deliver superior stiffness and offer the structural integrity that foodservice and bakery formats demand.

“The value of Performa Natura Aqua is not only in the board itself, but in what it makes possible for our customers: a solution that can be adopted efficiently in converting while supporting lighter packaging structures in the end-use,” Kenttamaa adds.

In converting, the pigment-coated top side supports consistent visual appearance across standard printing and finishing processes, while the board’s stiffness contributes to stable runnability. For brand owners, the result is packaging that maintains its shape, protects food reliably, and presents consistently across formats and markets.

Stora Enso’s Aqua dispersion coating uses less plastic content compared to conventional barrier alternatives, can enable faster repulping of barrier-coated board in conventional recycling processes, and can increase the amount of paper recovered. This innovation is achieved within a solution compatible with existing converting processes, avoiding trade-offs between performance and operational efficiency.

Performa Natura Aqua is available in a range of grammages from 195 to 320 g/m², providing flexibility across different packaging formats and requirements. The launch expands the Performa portfolio into applications where grease resistance is required, while maintaining the visual and structural characteristics expected from a folding boxboard.
